Burning and Safety Tips
I have posted these tips for several reasons. One is that many times the warning labels on candles are so small you really cant read them even if you wanted to, I have a warning label on the each of my candles that also has burning instructions and so far, they aren't too hard to read :-). The other is, that if you follow the burning instructions, you will have a longer burn time for your candle without unsightly sooting or "black floaters" in the candle. I take every precaution when making these candles and if they do not pass my tests, they do not get sold. I will not sell a candle that I would not burn in my own home.
Remove all packaging before lighting any candle. Be sure to save any instructions that may be on a hangtag.
Place on a protected, heat-resistant, dry surface, away from anything that can catch fire, and out of reach of children and pets.
Burn each candle for 1 hour for every inch in diameter. (Example: a container candle 4 inches in diameter should be burned 4 hours at a time to ensure a large melt pool.) This helps reduce the amount of wax left on the sides of a container.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep wick trimmed to 1/4 inch to prevent smoking. If your candle is smoking, blow out the candle, trim the wick and relight. A good way to trim the wick is to use a large pair of nail clippers. This way you can clip the wick close to the wax and remove it all at once.
Keep candles out of drafts to ensure an even burn and to prevent smoking.
Keep wax pool free of wick trimmings or other foreign matter which may present a fire hazard.
Extinguish candles by blowing them out gently so as not to splatter liquid wax or use a snuffer. Do not use water! For jars, do not replace the lid while the candle is still burning. For smokeless extinguishing, use a wick dipper. (See the monthly special page for ordering)
If the wick is off-center, simply move the extinguished wick to the center with a metal spoon handle while the wax is still soft. Take care not to get hot wax on your skin
Containers may become hot - handle with care.
Discontinue use when only 3/4 inch of wax remains in container. NEVER burn all the way to the bottom, this is sound advise for all candles. Once the remaining wax has hardened and cooled, place the jar in the freezer for 5 minutes, then chip out the wax to use in your tart warmer! No waste!
Store colored candles in a cool dry place away from light to prevent fading.
Please DO NOT use soy candles for lotions. Some fragrances used in candles are not meant to be used on the skin and it really isn't sanitary. Lotion is meant for skin softening, candles are meant to be burned for ambiance and scent :-)
